It was carried out the first phase of the Study about the History of Alentejo’s Marble Industry covering the period between 1850 and 1986, to present the several dynamics which this industry has been going through as well as the geographical area covered by it.

The research on the History of the Marble Industry aimed to demonstrate how the domains of historical, technical, industrial and artistic knowledge of a given heritage value can sustain its cultural and touristic ability or role with the reproduction of the available information. In this case we involve several counties of Alentejo, where marble as dictated the history of men and techniques transforming the landscape in its exploration.

 

For the construction of the Center of Documentation and Information on the Heritage and History of the Marble Industry, the project counted with the participation of a multidisciplinary team of investigators in Heritage, History, Archeology and Socially areas, among others, within the Center of Culture Studies, History, Arts and Heritage (CECHAP) of Vila Viçosa. It still counted with the scientific coordination of Professor Doctor Daniel Alves, from the Institute of Contemporary History of University Nova of Lisbon, scientific coordination of Professor Doctor Luísa Tiago Oliveira, from the Centre of Studies of Contemporary History from ISCTE, and the scientific coordination of Professor Doctor Ana Cardoso de Matos, from the Interdisciplinary Center of History, Culture and Societies from University of Évora.

 

We highlight that the project PHIM – Heritage and History of the Marble Industry is funded by QREN, regarding the European Fund for Regional Development (FEDER) regarding the Operational Program of Alentejo 2007-2013 – INALENTEJO,  being the financial contribution from FEDER of 139 995,55 €, in a total investment of the operation of 199 993,63€.
